Chunk Racing.

I haven't posted in a while,
but I was busy 'tooning for Rory and his friends at Chunk Racing, California!
They race a VORRA T class, Best In The Desert 7200 Truck,
with a Toyota body and Chevy 4.3 ltr engine.

We're quite pleased with the final result :-)

Sketching for Overland Journal, Saturday evening.
It's a rough sketch  I did with Sketchbook Pro which I printed and I'm working on with a Pentel SignPen...

Africa Race cartoon: inking session.

Back to the drawing board (or table).
Detail of the buggy and Kamaz truck I'm inking.
Winsor & Newton Cotman series brush leaves a lot to desire :-[

Africa Race buggy.

I've been sketching & swearing a lot recently;
this is a rough I did today, the buggy 'toon is based on Jean-Louis Schlesser's vehicle.
Other than this, the final picture will include a KAMAZ truck and a motorbike.

A lot of stuff in a single sheet of paper!

Sketch for a D90 T-shirt.

A few nights ago I banged my head on the Wacom tablet trying to come up with some fresh concept for my shirt project, dedicated to the Defender this time.

After the first bad 4, I finally nailed it down the right way.
In an humble homage to Dave "Big" Deal...

Still undecided about the writtings, because I love both of them.

Lineart-ed in Sketchbook Pro, (very!!!) rough painted with PS.

Lauren for a change.

One of the many little things I postponed to do for too long.
My very humble attempt at "portraying" the beautiful Lauren Bacall.
After watching "The Big Sleep" a couple of days ago, I got pumped and couldn't wait anymore.

Sketching heads.

I spent some time sketching various "heads" for the character behind the wheel; I'm not sure in the driver will be visible, but if so I'm trying to give him the right look.

Done in Sketchbook Pro.

Sketch for a shirt.

Something I had in mind for a while.
Thinking about a couple of shirts, one with a Series and one with a Defender...

I'm also trying to work on values first, after the workshop in London with Nathan Fowkes.

Back from London...

I got back to Italy after a long weekend in London.
What I did:
  • I went to Nathan Fowkes' workshop about "designing with color and light"; Nathan is a concept artist for animation and entertainment projects, teacher of drawing, painting, color and design. He worked for DreamWorks, Blue Sky, Digital Domain and Disney. This guy's a monster. The workshop was extremely interesting, with a lot of stuff in just 4 hours. I wish I had a workshop like this every weekend.
  • I drank too many beers
  • I got some nice drawing pads and a sketchbook
  • I had great food (fish & chips and hamburgers)
  • I met an old friend
  • I met Giulia who lives and works in London, and does some nice stuff :-)
What I did not:
  •   I didn't get lost
  •   I didn't find the brushes I need (d'oh!!!) :-(
  •   I didn't miss the plane :-)

"ICKX" G-WAGEN: two more.

Back after a few days out on the Alps, camping and wheeling with friends :-)
I've been asked two more cartoons of the Dakar G-Wagen, so I went back to the drawing board,
here's the first.

Sketch #6, from digital rough to pencil lineart.

"ICKX" G-WAGEN: done!

I finished the Ickx replica Mercedes G this morning.
I'm quite happy with the quality of lines and overall shape, and the coloring (although it's white!).

More in the pipeline!

"ICKX" G-WAGEN: inked!

I didn't want to risk so I pulled the "old" brush out,
and it worked faultessly until the end (almost, then it died and I had to finish the tires with a smaller one).

It turned out very nice and sharp, I'm proud of it

Painting tomorrow.

"ICKX" G-WAGEN: lineart.

COL-ERASE Carmine Red.

Still undecided about the driver, I may touch it up a little,
but I'm happy with the lines :-)

Rough concept for a logo.

Something I should've started weeks and weeks ago,
but never had the right "spark".

I quite like the slick silhouette, loosely based on an existing vehicle...

"ICKX" G-WAGEN: various quick sketches.

This is the kind of stuff I had in mind.

[Judas Priest: LIVE VENGEANCE, 1982]

"ICKX" G-WAGEN: sketch 6.

Back after a few days spent amongst friends and old Rovers.
Sketch #6, and I feel good vibrations :-)

The plan for today is to do many simple sketches, cut to the bone,
just playing with lines of the G and see how everything flows.

I like this one, will try a few more and then make my choice for the definitive cartoon.

"ICKX" G-WAGEN: sketch 3.

Laptop is overheating, and Photoshop is playing silly and commands don't respond anymore.
I'm done for this evening.

[Judas Priest: Hell Bent For Leather/Killing Machine, 1979]

"ICKX" G-WAGEN: sketch 2.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen is more difficult than I thought.
I'm still trying to keep it simple (this is the hardest thing) and make my way through the lines to "get it".

[Judas Priest: Defenders Of The Faith]

New project.

This time I'll "toon" a faithful replica of Jacky Ickx' (Ixxx!!!!!) Dakar G-Wagen.

My first G!

First sketch, Sketchbook Pro.

4499 FLATTIE: done!

Been through a couple of minor tweaks during the weekend,
but now it's here, officially approved and "liked" by Jesse!

Soon on T-shirts!

4499 FLATTIE: inked!

I've been busy with another cartoon and helping a friend to drive his new Land Rover from UK to Italy, across France and Switzerland...fun trip but tiring!

I am back now, and the 4499 cartoon is now inked and ready for some cosmetic touch-up (silly me, I forgot to add the "/\" brace to the cage!). My new Winsor & Newton brushes sucked :-(

Soon it'll be painting time!

Rock-star (aha) Jesse Haines choosed me for a cartoon of his rock buggy.
Very flattering and exciting at the same time!
I can't wait to start sketching.

Quick portrait of the man himself, Mr. Haines :-)
Sketchbook Pro + CS.

GREEN MONSTER: finished card.

I did this for Matthew & Carmie who are waiting for a baby.
Of course, there could be no better vehicle to rush to the hospital with,
than Matt's own NAS D90, aka the Green Monster.

Enjoy the ride!

Pencil sketch, PS and and Rihanna (Good Girl Gone Bad)

I had a few samples of my "art" framed for the Allrad Messe in Bad Kissingen, Germany.
It's the biggest offroad expo in Europe, and I'll be hosted by OFFROAD magazine at their booth.

I'll bring these ones to put on display and a few prints for those interested.

Fingers crossed...

GREEN MONSTER: sketch 4.

Another try at Matthew's D90, bumper and spotlights are still missing.
At this stage I'm still playing with the D90, trying different positions and giving the overall shape of the Defender the right "tweak".

Background will probably be minimal.

1963 CORVETTE: inking.

As I can't paint for toffee today (blew the YJ cartoon three times!),
I switched to the 'Vette.

Brand new Cotman/Winsor & Newton n°4 brush and black ink...

(Soundtrack: Metallica, Death Magnetic)
